Diamonds In Mozambique

Mozambique’s government said that the country had commercial quality diamond deposits and is committed to creating legal sales mechanisms to prevent the use of the gems to finance illicit activities. More than 40 diamond prospecting operations are underway in the provinces of Gaza (South), ManicaTete (Centre) and Niassa (North), which shows the confidence of investors in the potential of diamonds in Mozambique.

Diamond Natural Formation

Crystalized carbon structure formed beneath earth over millions of years under intense condition of heat and pressure and they were brought to the surface under natural events “volcanic eruptions and earth quakes”.

Diamonds Certification

To prevent the illegal sale of precious and semi-precious stones, the Mozambican government has set up warehouses in Maputo and Nampula and will encourage miners to license their activity and certify the stones.

Mozambique is taking a step towards compliance with the so-called Kimberley Process, an international mechanism that defines the guidelines for the sale of precious stones in order to prevent the entry into the trade of so-called “blood diamonds” mined in war zones.

Based on a favorable geological setting and isolated panning finds of diamonds along the Limpopo River, potential exists for alluvial and alluvial deposits, from the cratons in South Africa and Zimbabwe, along the Libombo mountains in Maputo province and along the length of the Limpopo River Basin in Gaza province particularly near the border with Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Diamond Mining

  • Exploration for Diamond bearing Kimberites rocks and alluvial diamonds in following selected areas:
    1. Lugenda river at Niassa Province
    2. TeteSofala and Zambezia Provinces
    3. South Save river
  • Mozambique confirmed last month the discovery of diamonds in the Massangena district of the Gaza province. The country had been working, with the help of Angola, towards the certification of its diamond mining by the Kimberley Process.
  • Niassa and Cabo Delgado provinces, because mining for ruby and corundum is done in grand industrial scale here.
  • Usually, this kind of gemstones mining is done in a smaller scale and mostly by artisanal miners.
  • As a consequence of this increased geological knowledge, investment in Mozambique’s mineral potential by leading international and regional mining companies has increased particularly for gold, diamonds and other gemstones and titanium minerals.
  • Based on a favorable geological setting and isolated panning finds of diamonds along the Limpopo River, potential exists for alluvial and alluvial deposits in the Libombo mountains in Maputo province and along the length of the Limpopo River Basin in Gaza province particularly near the border with Zimbabwe and South Africa.
