Mozambique: Gold production in 2021 reached record high of over 800kg – report

Gold production in Mozambique reached a record high last year, rising to 800 kilos from 545 kilos in the previous year, according to a report sent to Lusa today by the government’s Kimberley Process Management Unit.

Production for the year 2021 had been planned for around 550 kilos, but so far it is above 800 kilos, states the report form the unit, which works under the aegis of the minister for mineral resources and energy, Max Tonela.

The analysis of last year’s production is not complete because the data from Manica, Zambézia and Tete provinces, all in central Mozambique, is missing.

The unit notes that 2021 saw the creation of expert brigades that have been tracking the production of companies working in the sector, in a plan that also includes groups that do artisanal mining.

The ambition of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy is to ensure that artisanal miners sell their product to holders of official marketing licences, so ensuring that proceeds are taxed and increasing revenue from production, the document adds.
